Border entry information
German passport holders have two main options for tourist travel to Indonesia.12 Choose based on how long you plan to stay:
Option 1: Visa on Arrival / e-VOA (IDR 500,000)
• 30 days initial stay
• Extendable for another 30 days
• Best for most holiday trips
Option 2: Tourist e-Visa (IDR 1,500,000)
• 60 days initial stay
• Extendable for up to 180 days total
• Best for longer visits
Most German travelers heading to Bali or other Indonesian destinations choose the VOA for its simplicity and lower cost.2 If you know you will want to stay longer than 30 days, the Tourist e-Visa may be more convenient than extending a VOA.
If your application is denied
Entry denial at Indonesian immigration is rare for German citizens. In 2024, only about 942 foreigners were denied entry out of 5.3 million arrivals at Bali alone (0.018%), and most denials involved travelers from countries not eligible for VOA.56 Common reasons for denial include:
Passport validity less than 6 months
Passport damage (torn pages, water damage)
No return ticket
Being on the immigration blacklist from previous violations
If denied entry, you will typically be returned on the next available flight to Germany at your own expense. There is no appeal process at the border.
To minimize risk:
Ensure your passport has 6+ months validity and is in good condition
Have your return ticket confirmation ready
Apply for e-VOA in advance if you have any concerns
Contact the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin before travel if you have a complicated immigration history

What is the difference between VOA and e-VOA?
They are the same visa with the same cost. The e-VOA is applied for online before travel, saving time at the airport. The regular VOA is obtained at the airport upon arrival. Both allow 30 days and can be extended.
Can I extend my Indonesia tourist visa?
Yes, if you entered with a Visa on Arrival (VOA). You can extend it once for another 30 days at any immigration office in Indonesia for IDR 500,000. The extension process takes 5-7 working days.
What is the 60-day Tourist e-Visa?
The Tourist e-Visa allows an initial 60-day stay (compared to 30 days with VOA) and can be extended. It costs IDR 1,500,000 and requires proof of funds of at least USD 2,000. Apply online before travel.
Which airports in Indonesia accept VOA?
All major international airports accept VOA, including Ngurah Rai (Bali), Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), Juanda (Surabaya), Kualanamu (Medan), and 12 others. Over 90 seaports and 6 land borders also accept VOA.
What happens if I overstay my visa in Indonesia?
Overstaying up to 60 days incurs a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day, payable at the airport or immigration office. Overstaying more than 60 days results in detention, deportation, and a potential re-entry ban of up to several years.
Do I need a return ticket to enter Indonesia?
Yes, immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel. Airlines also commonly check this before allowing you to board in Germany. Have a return flight, onward flight, or proof of exit ready.
How long must my passport be valid to enter Indonesia?
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in Indonesia and have at least 2 blank pages. This is strictly enforced and you will be denied entry without it.
Can I work in Indonesia on a tourist visa?
No. The tourist visa (including VOA and e-VOA) is strictly for tourism, visiting family, government visits, business meetings, goods purchasing, or transit. Any paid work requires a proper work visa. Indonesia has increased enforcement against digital nomads working illegally.
Is there a tourist tax to enter Bali?
Yes, since 2024 international tourists arriving in Bali must pay a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 (approximately €9). This is separate from the visa fee and goes toward cultural preservation and environmental programs.
